Dental Crowns

When it comes to repairing or replacing broken, discolored, or diseased teeth, a crown is a likely and practical solution that is available at the office of Grady L. Lembke, DDS in Edmond, OK.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a dental treatment product that permanently covers a tooth that has either become decayed, diseased, damaged, or cracked in some way. In most instances, when root canals are performed to save a tooth, a crown will be placed over the existing tooth to hide the discoloration and protect the inside of the original tooth from becoming infected or further damaged.

What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?

The most popular type of crown used in dental offices is porcelain, but you may also find crowns made of gold or a mix of several materials being placed over existing teeth.

Benefits of Having a Crown Placed on a Tooth

The most obvious benefit of having a crown placed on a tooth is that the existing tooth does not have to be removed, which saves you from a great deal of discomfort and improves recovery. We’ll always work to save existing teeth. When a tooth needs to be removed, that leaves patients susceptible to infection, crowding of teeth, and misshapen mouths. Crowns allow us to protect and preserve the original tooth without causing additional discomfort to our patient.

Additional benefits include that the crown is permanent. Dental crowns only need to be replaced if they become damaged due to accident or injury. Also, crowns look and feel like your real teeth. Grady L. Lembke, DDS can craft a crown that will fit in your mouth perfectly, so no one will know you have one.

What Is Involved in Getting a Dental Crown?

Having a crown placed starts with a visit to our office. Dr. Lembke will examine your teeth to determine if you are a good candidate for a crown. If you are, and you have decided to move forward, our office will take a mold of your teeth and have a crown made that is custom designed just for you.

Once the crown is made, you’ll be scheduled back to have it bonded to your tooth. Usually, two visits are all that is required to complete a crown.
